TURNKEY PCBA · BUYER’S GUIDE

What is turnkey PCB assembly?

Turnkey PCB assembly combines PCB fabrication, purchasing the agreed components and board assembly under one coordinated project scope. The quotation defines the included inspection, programming, functional testing, packaging and delivery responsibilities. Design work and additional services need to be agreed separately.

For a one-stop build, send OrinewPCB your board files, BOM, assembly data and quantity. Use the turnkey PCB assembly service page to prepare your request, or start with the PCBA quotation form if your requirements are ready.

Full turnkey, partial turnkey and assembly using supplied materials.

The practical difference is who provides the boards and components. Make those responsibilities explicit rather than relying on the service name alone.

Full turnkey

Request PCB fabrication, the agreed BOM procurement and assembly together. Define the material specification, approved parts and checks needed for the build.

Partial turnkey

You provide agreed materials while the supplier handles the remaining procurement and assembly scope. List supplied parts, quantities, packaging and arrival dates.

Supplied-material assembly

You provide the boards and components. Confirm suitability, quantities, handling, assembly preparation and the required inspection or testing.

What should your turnkey quote include?

A useful quotation identifies the approved board and BOM revision, quantities, purchasing responsibilities and manufacturing scope. It also states the costs, schedule assumptions and remaining questions.

  • PCB fabrication: materials, stack-up, dimensions, finish and fabrication requirements.
  • Component procurement: exact manufacturer part numbers, supplied parts and approved alternatives.
  • Assembly: SMT, through-hole or mixed technology, placement sides, orientation and variants.
  • Preparation: stencil, programming, tooling, fixtures or handling requirements as applicable.
  • Checks and tests: inspection, programming, functional testing, acceptance criteria and reports.
  • Delivery: required date, destination, packaging and agreed shipping responsibilities.

Programming, enclosure assembly, coating or qualification work should be requested explicitly when needed. Confirm whether it is included and what information or preparation it requires.

Files to send for a one-stop PCBA build.

Keep every file on the same revision. Identify missing information clearly so the team can ask the right questions before a final quote.

  • Gerber and drill files, fabrication notes and outline
  • Stack-up, material, thickness, copper and surface-finish requirements
  • BOM with manufacturer part numbers, reference designators and quantities per board
  • Do-not-fit positions, supplied materials and approved alternatives
  • Placement data and assembly drawings with orientation and variant information
  • Build quantity, expected next batch, target date and destination
  • Programming instructions, test procedures and acceptance criteria where required

How the project moves from request to build.

1. Review the requirements

The team reviews the available files, materials, quantity and scope. Resolve revision differences and missing information.

2. Agree the quote

Clarify availability, approved alternatives, preparation, checks, costs and schedule. Approve the reviewed purchasing and production scope.

3. Build to the agreed release

Use the approved revisions and acceptance criteria. Document changes before a repeat batch and clarify the agreed delivery arrangements.

Benefits to consider—and responsibilities to keep clear.

A coordinated supplier can reduce the number of purchasing and manufacturing handoffs. That is useful when you want fabrication, sourcing and assembly reviewed together. You still need an approved design, sourcing rules and clear acceptance criteria.

Compare the complete quoted scope rather than assuming turnkey is always the cheapest option. Include boards, components, assembly, setup, programming, fixtures, testing and delivery where applicable. Identify one-time costs separately from repeat build costs.

Specify how proposed component substitutions are reviewed and approved. Ask for the procurement documentation your project requires. Avoid treating a broad quality slogan as a substitute for the agreed sourcing and inspection process.

Need a specific delivery date?

State whether your deadline means production complete, ready to ship or delivered to your location. Board complexity, material readiness, component availability, preparation and testing affect the available schedule.

For a deadline-sensitive build, include the required date and destination with the files. Confirm manufacturing and shipping assumptions separately in the quote.

Turnkey PCB assembly FAQs.

Does turnkey automatically include PCB design?

No. The approved quote defines the scope. Provide the design files for manufacturing, or state the design assistance you need so its availability and responsibilities can be reviewed separately.

Can I provide some components?

Yes. Describe a partial turnkey request and list the supplied part numbers, quantities, packaging and expected arrival dates. Define the remaining procurement and assembly scope.

Can I request a quote before every file is complete?

Start with the application, quantity, services and target date. A final manufacturing quote may require complete board, BOM and assembly data.

Are component replacements allowed automatically?

Specify approved alternatives and parts that must not change. Proposed replacements need a design review and your approval before purchasing.

Is functional testing always included?

Include your test procedure, firmware, fixture requirements and pass/fail criteria. Confirm preparation, coverage and reporting in the quotation.

Request a full turnkey PCB assembly quote.
