What to know before purchasing: A capacitor stores electric charge and is used for functions such as decoupling, filtering and energy storage. Buying the same nominal capacitance and voltage does not necessarily preserve effective capacitance, loss, lifetime or mechanical compatibility.

Check Effective Capacitance Before Approving an MLCC Change
For some high-dielectric-constant MLCCs, applied DC voltage reduces effective capacitance. Temperature and measurement conditions also matter. Review the manufacturer’s data for the exact part and relevant operating point; do not assume that a smaller package or a higher printed voltage rating guarantees the same in-circuit performance.

Does the same capacitance and voltage rating make two capacitors equivalent?
No. Compare technology, dielectric, effective capacitance, loss, temperature behavior, dimensions, polarity and applicable life or loading requirements. Approval should be based on the actual circuit.
What does DC bias mean for an MLCC purchasing decision?
For relevant MLCC dielectrics, capacitance can change when DC voltage is applied. Use the exact manufacturer part’s characteristics to check the effective capacitance at your operating conditions before approving a replacement.
Can capacitors be sourced for both prototypes and production PCBA?
