OrinewPCB · Through-hole and mixed assemblies

Through-Hole PCB Assembly Services

Bring your through-hole components into one coordinated PCBA quote. Request PCB fabrication, BOM sourcing, SMT and through-hole assembly, plus the inspection and tests your project needs.

Send quantity, board files and BOM. Include connector orientation, lead-forming and test instructions when available.

What THT means for your project

Through-hole parts, defined in your build scope.

Through-hole PCB assembly (THT) mounts components by inserting their leads into PCB holes and soldering the intended connections. A mixed-technology board combines these parts with surface-mount components.

PCB fabrication

Provide the approved board revision, drill data, board stackup and fabrication notes. Hole dimensions and component lead dimensions should be reviewed together.

Component sourcing

Ask OrinewPCB to review the complete BOM, or identify the parts you will supply. Use exact manufacturer part numbers and define approval for alternatives.

Assembly and tests

Identify through-hole and SMT items, assembly variants, programming and test requirements. Confirm the included work and deliverables in the project quotation.

Parts and board fit

Specify more than the component value.

Through-hole packages may differ in lead pitch, body size, mounting height and delivery format even when their electrical values match. Exact part numbers and mechanical instructions help avoid assembly questions after materials arrive.

  • Connectors: mating direction, pin 1, board side and mounting height.
  • Lead forming: bend spacing, stand-off, lead trimming and any mechanical support.
  • Polarized parts: polarity and orientation shown in the assembly drawing.
  • Board fit: finished hole sizes, pad geometry and component lead dimensions.
  • Material supply: loose, taped or other packaging, quantities and expected arrival dates.

Include manufacturer drawings for unusual packages and flag any parts that need separate handling.

Axial resistor illustrations from the website component library. Use the exact part number and lead dimensions for your BOM; these examples do not identify parts used in a customer build.

SMT plus through-hole

Plan the mixed-technology assembly together.

A board with surface-mount ICs and through-hole connectors needs a coordinated assembly plan. Tell us which sides are populated, the through-hole locations and any component temperature restrictions.

Placement and access

Provide placement data for SMT parts and assembly drawings for through-hole items. Identify nearby components, tall parts and access constraints.

Soldering route

Hand, wave and selective soldering are different process options. The appropriate route depends on the layout, components and quantity; confirm the proposed method during project review.

Build sequence

Record component restrictions and any later operations such as mechanical fitting, programming or testing. Agree on the sequence and any required fixtures before release.

A useful RFQ package

Files to request a through-hole PCBA quote.

Board and material files

  • Gerber files, drill files and fabrication notes
  • BOM with manufacturer, exact MPN, quantity and designators
  • Clear DNP list and approved alternatives
  • Customer-supplied parts and sourcing responsibilities

Build and delivery instructions

  • Assembly drawings showing side, orientation and mechanical details
  • SMT pick-and-place file when surface-mount parts are included
  • Prototype and next-batch quantities
  • Inspection, firmware, tests, target date and delivery destination

For a through-hole-only build, the assembly drawing is especially useful. If your files are incomplete, describe what is ready so the missing information can be identified.

Inspection and functional requirements

Define how the finished boards will be checked.

Specify component orientation, solder-joint acceptance requirements and the inspection evidence you need. If an acceptance standard or revision is required, state it in the RFQ for review.

For functional testing, provide the procedure, limits, firmware version and fixture requirements. Confirm which checks are included and who prepares the test setup.

Before approving the first build

  • Board, BOM and assembly revision match
  • Material changes have written approval
  • Connector orientation and mechanical fit are defined
  • Inspection and functional test scope are agreed
  • First-article review and release responsibilities are clear

Through-hole assembly questions

Prepare your project for review.

Can I request SMT and through-hole assembly in one quote?

Yes. Send the complete BOM, board files, SMT placement data and through-hole assembly drawings. Identify both populations so the assembly plan and included work can be reviewed together.

Can the quote include PCB fabrication and all components?

You can request a full turnkey scope including board fabrication and BOM sourcing. Mark customer-supplied parts, approved alternatives and any sourcing restrictions before material review.

Which soldering process will be used?

The process should be confirmed against your layout, part restrictions and quantity. If you require a particular method, state it in the RFQ and ask for feasibility confirmation.

What determines the assembly price and schedule?

Component availability, board requirements, quantity, insertion and lead preparation, assembly complexity and agreed tests all affect the quotation. Include the target date so material and build planning can be reviewed.

Does an inspection check every product function?

Inspection and functional testing have different scopes. Specify the electrical or functional checks you require, with test instructions and fixtures where relevant, and confirm their inclusion in the quote.
