PCB PROTOTYPE ASSEMBLY EXPLAINED
What is prototype PCB assembly?
Prototype PCB assembly creates a small build of populated circuit boards for design evaluation, firmware development or an agreed test plan. It combines approved bare-board files, BOM components and assembly instructions into a sample you can evaluate before the next release.
Full turnkey prototype support: OrinewPCB coordinates PCB fabrication, purchasing the agreed BOM and SMT or through-hole assembly from Shenzhen, China. Programming, functional testing and fixtures are reviewed against your procedure and included when agreed in the quotation.
CHOOSE YOUR SUPPLY SCOPE
Turnkey samples, supplied materials or bare PCBs.
Full Turnkey PCBA
Ask us to coordinate the bare PCBs, agreed BOM purchasing and assembly. Specify the sample quantity, approved alternatives and required inspections or tests.
Partial Turnkey Assembly
Supply selected boards or components and ask us to source the remaining agreed items. Identify part numbers, quantities, packaging and material arrival dates.
PCB Prototype Fabrication
Need bare boards for your own assembly? Send Gerber and drill files, stack-up, material, copper, finish and board quantity for a fabrication quote.
PREPARE A CONSISTENT BUILD PACKAGE
What files do you need for a prototype PCBA quote?
- Gerber and NC drill: approved PCB revision, fabrication notes, stack-up and board finish.
- BOM: reference designators, manufacturer part numbers, quantity per board and do-not-populate positions.
- Pick-and-place / CPL: board side, position and rotation, supported by an assembly drawing.
- Build scope: sample quantity, sourcing responsibilities, target date and shipping destination.
- Verification: inspection coverage, firmware, programming and functional test instructions where required.
Use the same revision across board files, BOM and placement data. Clearly mark design changes and approved component alternatives.

FILE REVIEW TO BUILD RELEASE
A defined workflow for your first assembled boards.
1. Review Files & BOM
Check revision consistency, package requirements, missing part details and purchasing availability. Resolve manufacturability questions before release.
2. Agree on the Quote
Confirm material responsibilities, sample quantity, approved substitutions, assembly instructions and the inspection or test scope.
3. Fabricate & Assemble
Coordinate the approved PCB, material purchasing and assembly plan. Review open questions before committing changes to the build.
4. Inspect & Evaluate
Complete the agreed checks, deliver the samples and review your evaluation before releasing the next revision or batch.
INSPECTION & FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Define what a successful prototype needs to demonstrate.
Assembly inspection
Discuss component presence, orientation and solder-joint inspection, including AOI or X-ray where appropriate to the package and agreed coverage.
Programming and functional checks
Provide firmware, a programming procedure and pass/fail criteria. Functional testing may require a fixture, connections or measurement equipment that should be reviewed with the quote.
Agree on the evidence before the build. Assembly inspection checks the manufactured board; functional testing evaluates the defined behavior under your test conditions. Specify both when your evaluation needs both.
FROM SAMPLES TO THE NEXT BATCH
Keep the production release connected to your prototype.
Send the sample quantity and expected next-batch quantity together. Keep a record of board, BOM, firmware and test changes so material purchasing and repeat assembly can be reviewed against the version you approve.
Record Evaluation Changes
List the issues found during sample evaluation and the changes required. Update the fabrication files, BOM and assembly instructions together.
Review Material Readiness
Confirm approved alternatives and parts with uncertain availability. State whether prototype materials will also be used for the next build.
Agree on Batch Verification
Define first-article approval, inspection coverage, programming and test instructions for the next release.
CUSTOMER-REPORTED PROJECT EXPERIENCE
A sample-to-batch example: 2 boards to 50 sets.
Rahul reports a project that increased from two sample boards to 50 sets. The feedback describes DFM review and coordinated material planning, with delivery on schedule.
Customer feedback dated June 24, 2026. The quantity and delivery experience are customer-reported.
Quote your sample and next batch together.
Share the two quantities, approved board revision and BOM. The team can review setup work, material purchasing and test preparation for each stage.
PROTOTYPE COST & LEAD TIME
What affects a prototype PCB assembly quotation?
Board specification, component purchasing, assembly complexity, sample quantity and the agreed verification scope determine the quote. Stencils, setup, programming and fixtures can add preparation work, while component availability can affect the schedule.
Tell us your target delivery date and destination. Confirm the quoted build scope and material readiness before relying on a production or shipping date.
PROTOTYPE PCB ASSEMBLY FAQ
Before you release your sample build.
Can I order a small number of assembled prototypes?
Send your required sample quantity, board files and BOM. Build feasibility, purchasing minimums, setup work, price and schedule are reviewed for the specific project.
Can you source the components for the prototypes?
Full turnkey support can include the agreed BOM purchasing and PCB fabrication. Identify manufacturer part numbers and approved alternatives, and confirm material availability before release.
Can I supply components I already have?
Yes, supplied materials can be reviewed under a partial turnkey arrangement. List exact parts, quantities, packaging and arrival dates, including any remaining items you want us to source.
Does a prototype quote include functional testing?
Include the required tests in your inquiry. Share your procedure, pass/fail criteria, firmware and fixture needs so the team can confirm the included preparation and test work.
How quickly can you deliver a prototype assembly?
The schedule depends on file readiness, PCB fabrication, component availability, quantity and test preparation. Provide a target date so the team can review the practical build and shipping plan.
Can you make bare prototype PCBs without assembly?
Yes, you can request PCB prototype fabrication separately. Include board quantity, Gerber and drill data, stack-up, material, copper thickness and finish requirements.
