FR4 PCB Manufacturing & Turnkey Assembly

Move from a generic “FR4” note to an approved, buildable circuit board. OrinewPCB coordinates FR4 PCB fabrication, original-component sourcing and turnkey assembly for small-to-medium batches and multiple product variants.

Quick answer

FR4 is a glass-reinforced epoxy laminate family, not a single material with one universal dielectric constant or temperature rating. A useful manufacturing specification identifies the laminate grade, construction, finished thickness and copper, then connects these choices to assembly and operating requirements.

Which FR4 specification belongs on your fabrication drawing?

Start with the requirements that affect the finished design. If an exact laminate is mandatory, identify the manufacturer and grade. If equivalents are allowed, state the acceptance criteria and request approval before a substitute is used. “High Tg” alone does not describe the full thermal or electrical requirement.

Inputs for an equivalent, reviewable quotation
Review item What to provide Why it matters
Laminate grade Approved manufacturer/grade, or defined criteria for proposed equivalents. Prevents a generic FR4 description from hiding a material change.
Thermal requirements Assembly thermal exposure, operating environment, Tg test method and any specified CTE or moisture requirements. Tg is a material transition property; it is not the permitted continuous operating temperature of the complete PCB.
Electrical construction Stack-up, dielectric thickness, copper and any impedance targets/tolerances. Dk/Df depend on grade, construction, frequency and test method; use the approved design data.
Mechanical definition Finished thickness/tolerance, outline, holes, flatness and connector or enclosure constraints. A nominal layer count does not define a mechanically interchangeable board.
Assembly release Surface finish, BOM, placement files, soldering instructions and test scope. The board and components must be reviewed as one manufacturing release.

Choose FR4 against the complete assembly requirement

Many control, interface and general electronics designs use FR4. Material selection becomes more demanding when the design has repeated thermal processing, dense interconnects, high-speed signals or a demanding operating environment. Review those conditions before fixing the procurement description. A higher material headline rating does not automatically solve a layout or cooling problem.

  1. Identify the released board revision and exact laminate requirement.
  2. Approve the stack-up before controlled-impedance routing or a material change is finalized.
  3. Include finished copper, thickness, finish and critical mechanical dimensions.
  4. Provide the BOM and assembly files under the same revision reference.
  5. State first-article acceptance, programming and functional-test requirements.

FR4, RF laminate or a thermally focused construction?

For an RF design, compare loss and dielectric stability against the actual signal requirements; see our Rogers PCB material review. For a power or lighting board, review the complete thermal path and isolation requirement before moving to a metal-based construction. These are design decisions, not automatic upgrades. Request a board-and-BOM review when material choice also changes component mounting or assembly.

Quality from the bare PCB to the finished assembly

Every bare PCB we manufacture receives flying-probe electrical testing, not just a sample. Include the netlist where available and identify the required electrical-test records in your RFQ. Bare-board electrical testing checks manufactured networks; it is distinct from assembly inspection and finished-circuit functional validation.

OrinewPCB supplies and uses 100% brand-new, original, genuine electronic components in customer turnkey assemblies. Our manufacturer and distributor cooperation helps us seek competitive BOM prices and practical delivery options. Confirm full MPNs, source restrictions, documentation and current availability for your project. Proposed alternatives require your approval.

Nine PCBA quality stages

Our assembly quality workflow covers nine stages, with the applicable inspection scope agreed for the build:

  1. IQC: incoming material checks.
  2. SPI: solder paste inspection.
  3. Online AOI: in-line optical inspection.
  4. SMI: first-article inspection.
  5. IPQC: in-process quality checks.
  6. Offline AOI: post-solder optical inspection.
  7. X-ray: hidden-joint inspection to the agreed scope.
  8. Manual QC: workmanship review.
  9. Pre-shipment QA: identification, quantity and packaging checks.

These are nine quality stages, not nine functional tests on every assembly. Programming, ICT, functional testing and application-specific validation need agreed procedures, access or fixtures and pass/fail criteria. See our factory and quality workflow.

One review for your board, BOM and assembly release

Small-to-medium batches and high-mix turnkey PCB assembly are core OrinewPCB strengths. Ask us to review PCB fabrication, component purchasing and assembly against the same design revision. If you only need bare PCBs or specific components, identify that scope in your request.

100% brand-new original genuine components, with exact MPNs and customer-approved alternatives.

Turnkey PCBA

Coordinate the board, sourcing, assembly and agreed inspection, programming or functional-test requirements.

Our cooperation with manufacturers and distributors helps us seek competitive BOM prices and practical availability. Compare complete-build quotations using the same material, BOM, quantities, documentation and test scope. Prices and delivery are confirmed for the actual release; no component substitution is assumed.

Protect the target date with a complete release

We prioritize quality and the earliest practical delivery for the agreed build. Provide quantities by model, required delivery date and any critical component restrictions. Distinguish dispatch from arrival, and identify whether a smaller first batch or staged delivery is useful. Material availability, engineering approvals, component sourcing and test readiness affect the confirmed schedule.

For an urgent project, include the non-negotiable requirements and first-build priorities. See our quick-turn planning guidance and request a schedule review with your files.

Request a FR4 PCB & turnkey PCBA review

Tell us whether you need bare PCBs, BOM sourcing or complete turnkey assembly. For an initial discussion, describe the application; files can follow once the scope is clear.

  • Released PCB files and fabrication drawing
  • BOM with full MPNs, placement data and assembly drawing
  • Quantity for each model/variant and target delivery date
  • Approved FR4 grade or equivalent-material approval rules
  • Stack-up, impedance requirements and assembly thermal constraints

FR4 PCB & Assembly FAQ

Is FR4 the same as a specific Tg or Dk value?

No. It is a material family. Specify the grade and the relevant measurement conditions; construction and test method matter. Do not use a generic value as a guaranteed design parameter.

Can I request FR4 boards and complete assembly together?

Yes. Send the fabrication files, stack-up, BOM, placement data, quantity per variant and test requirements. We review bare PCB manufacture, sourcing and assembly together.

Does a higher Tg make every FR4 board suitable for high temperature?

No. Tg alone does not establish the continuous operating limit or reliability of the assembled product. Review the complete material data, construction, assembly exposure and application requirements.

What helps avoid delays in a repeat FR4 order?

Keep the approved material, stack-up, BOM and assembly revision identifiable. Mark changed components, population variants and acceptance requirements before requesting a repeat quotation.
